What’s on Page 45?

On page 45, my character, Caralyn Sharp is shopping with the man she can’t stand and his mother. Caralyn meets Alex Garrison when he rear-ends her car. They don’t exactly hit it off. In fact, Caralyn does a lot of screaming at him. After that, she believed she’d seen the last of him. Guess what? Alex happens to be the Best Man in her best friend’s wedding and she is the Maid of Honor. Asked to help her friend with her future in-laws, Caralyn sucks it up and shows Alex and his mother, Phoebe, where they can find the best shopping in Charleston. Is it a little awkward? Oh yes! Being a Maid of Honor is rough sometimes. She’s incredibly stressed and Alex does something that surprises her. He suggests that Caralyn let Phoebe take over the bridal shower she doesn’t have time to put together.

I can’t just admit I haven’t done anything for it except send a hasty, badly written email from my phone.

“Hey, Mom,” he says. Phoebe looks up at him with a frown.

“You need the entire bedroom set, Alexander, the furniture you have is barely decent. Real wood is what you need.”

“Mom, Caralyn is pretty swamped at work right now. Would you be able to take over Susanna’s bridal shower completely?”

My mouth drops open. I can’t believe he is trying to help me.

Meet Caralyn Sharp, representing South Carolina!

Hi, everyone, I’m Caralyn Sharp, from Charleston, South Carolina. I’m a public relations manager for successful businessman, Brad Cole. I love painting with watercolor, reading mysteries, and photography. I adore anything with butterflies on it. Charleston is a great place to live, right on the coast. For my talent, I will demonstrate how I multitask! I can paint a watercolor of a butterfly garden while sending a text as I carry on a conversation with my twin sister. All of this will be while I sit on a balance ball. I’ve recently started to try to get in shape and I’m taking a spinning class with Alex Garrison, a dreamy-eyed Air Force officer.

I’ve been asked to answer: If you had to choose an anthem for today’s woman, what would it be? I would choose Respect by Aretha Franklin. That’s what we women need more of. Forget Blurred Lines and 50 Shades of Grey. We are people who need to be taken seriously! Give us some R.E.S.P.E.C.T guys.

$100You can be a beauty queen too with this $100 gift card for Sephora. To enter, comment on this post with your email address and your answer to: If you had to choose an anthem for today’s woman, what would it be?

Review of A Reason to Run

Today I’m reviewing a wonderful women’s fiction novel I just finished, A Reason to Run by Christina Coryell. I definitely recommend it.

Here’s a little about it:

reasontorunPeople are talking about C.W. Oliver, the mysterious author with a book sitting atop the bestseller list. They are also talking about Camdyn Taylor, the pretty blonde from an embarrassing proposal rejection video that has recently gone viral. What would happen if people knew that those two individuals were one and the same?

Camdyn Taylor doesn’t like chaos, but it always seems to find her. When it inevitably appears, she does what comes naturally: She runs. That is one of the reasons she finds herself drawn to her ancestor, Willa Lawrence. A young widow with a new baby in the early 1800’s, her future and inheritance looked steady. Then, unexpectedly, she ran. With only the most basic necessities, she set off on a journey with her child toward an uncertain future.

Camdyn is determined to keep her pen name a secret, and she’s almost as determined to discover the reason for Willa’s impulsive departure. When she finds herself suddenly thrust into the spotlight after a suitor’s ill-advised proposal, she resorts to following Willa’s footsteps to Tennessee in order to finish her latest book.

Finding herself lost and in need of a little hope, she crosses paths with Cole Parker at just the right moment. She quickly becomes aware that things might never be the same, and while she’s focused on unearthing Willa’s reason to run…she just might discover her own.

My Review:

This book drew me in from the start. Camdyn is a complex and very real character. She certainly has a reason to run, a poor victim of viral-social-media-video infamy. The author did a brilliant job helping the reader feel the excitement Camdyn and Cole felt when they were getting to know each other and everything between them just clicked. It reminded me of the way it feels when you meet the right guy, and you do almost feel like a high-school girl with a crush again because you’re blushing so much. However, the road to love isn’t smooth for Camdyn and Cole, the viral video returns to wreck her reputation and both of them have past pain and disappointments to overcome.

It was so interesting that Camdyn chose to write a book about her ancestor Willa. I already love history, and family history is even more fascinating, so, of course, I thought it was an awesome idea to write a book about her great-great-great grandmother. It leads her to research and learn more about her family and I enjoyed that.

Despite complications and hurt feelings, there is a sweet romance in this story that won’t disappoint.

1397050_323783904459077_9068886798416538983_oChristina Coryell is a small-town girl from southwest Missouri with a heart full of dreams and a head bursting with stories. She earned her degrees in English and History from Drury University, and she does most of her writing with a couple kids climbing on her or loud guitars playing in the background. She thinks every great novel should be built on a great character, and in her first series, that character is Camdyn Taylor. All four volumes of The Camdyn Series are currently available.
