Our guest of honor, Jimmy Tanaka, may have been “The Most Hated Man in Hawaii,” but he was also the biggest donor in the history of the College of Commerce. We were in no position to be picky about the moral character of our benefactors. Not after the latest round of budget cuts.

Austen Inspirations

I’ve loved Jane Austen for so long and enjoyed each one of her six novels. There are never enough movie adaptations or novel retellings to tire me. I’ve recently launched Pride and Butterflies, an Austen-inspired tale, but not a retelling of Pride and Prejudice. Caralyn and Alex each meet each other on their worst day ever and have terrible first impressions of each other. Rather like Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, Caralyn and Alex find themselves in the same place over and over. Pride and Butterflies is a new story about finding love with someone you didn’t like at first.

My current project was inspired by Austen’s Persuasion. If you haven’t read it, please do! It is one of her best love stories and one of my favorites. The title of my new book is undecided, but it will be the second in a three-book series I’m calling Austen Inspirations. It may be out as early as December. The third book, still in planning, is loosely based on Emma. I expect it to be released sometime next year.

While inspired by our magnificent Jane, the stories have my own twist and head in new directions. I hope you will follow me to receive the news of their release dates. While you’re waiting, revisit Pride and Butterflies, Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Emma. I highly recommend the Norton Critical Editions.

If you have kids, I discovered these cute board book versions of Austen tales, Little Miss Austen. These are perfect for introducing very young ones to great literature in an adorable way.

A new short story from RJ Conte is free! Here’s a little about Lucent Sylph.

2D - CopyLucas Thissel has something he fears: an alien species of palm-sized glass fairies called Lucent Sylphs. They came through a portal from a metaphysical dimension, and they indenture themselves as slaves to human beings. Too much neglect or unkindness, and they will cloud over and disintegrate. Too much love and their hearts are overcome and burst.

And one has attached herself to him.
